All this week, Behind the Setlist is previewing Volume, a music festival in Spokane, Washington, which features 100 DIY and indie artists from the Pacific Northwest and beyond (put together by our friends at the Inlander). Our Spokane team will be on the ground during Volume on June 2 and June 3, but we wanted to dive into these artists ahead of time.
Who are they, where do they come from, and what can we expect? We turned up the Volume on each artist for a little preview palaver.
Cattywomp @ Red Room Lounge, 6/2, 9:15 pm
Where are you from and how did the group come together?
We are based out of Spokane, WA. Cattywomp formed in summer of 2015 from a collaborative songwriting project between guitarists AJ Stromberger and James Volz and saxophonist Kyle Freeman.
What’s your favorite song to play live?
Our song “Déjà Vu.” Its uptempo feel and driving bass line always draw in the crowd. Plus, the solo sections at the end feature all six of the band, which allows each member to show off their skills.
What goes into the making of a great setlist?
Balance. A great setlist should have movement since the way a set is arranged helps to guide the audience’s energy. There should be different moods of songs played throughout. Cover songs always help to bring the energy up too.
While at Volume fest, who are you most excited to see perform?
It’s tough to say with so many great acts, but probably KALAJ. We’ve heard a lot of good things about them, but haven’t had a chance to seen them yet.
What are your plans for the rest of the year? Writing, recording, touring?
We are currently finishing our second music video and are going into the studio next month to record a single. Then we are writing this summer and touring this fall.
