All this week, Behind the Setlist is previewing Volume, a music festival in Spokane, Washington, which features 100 DIY and indie artists from the Pacific Northwest and beyond (put together by our friends at the Inlander). Our Spokane team will be on the ground during Volume on June 2 and June 3, but we wanted to dive into these artists ahead of time.
Who are they, where do they come from, and what can we expect? We turned up the Volume on each artist for a little preview palaver.
Crimewave @ the Pin’s Main Stage, 6/2, 8:20 pm
Where are you from and how did this project come together?
I’ve been pursuing music since I was 13, but I didn’t actually start rapping till I was 18. I used to play guitar in various metal projects and produce beats for people on the side, but eventually I decided to just rap for myself. After my first EP did well I decided to take it more seriously.
What’s your favorite song to play live?
Probably “Scumbag.” That was my first song, but anywhere I play it everyone always yells the lyrics back at me. I like bringing my boy PE$T out to do his track “Villain,” which I produced. The hook always gets the crowd goin’ crazy.
What goes into the making of a great setlist?
I always try to have a good mix of songs in there, new and old stuff, maybe one song I haven’t released somewhere near the end.
While at Volume, who are you most excited to see perform?
Aww man, I wanted to see Monuments play live again, but I think they’re playing at the exact same time as me! I missed the Rot Monger boys though it’ll be cool sharing a stage with them and Slug Christ.
What are your plans for the rest of the year? Writing, recording, touring?
I’m goin’ 800 this year and from this point forward, a lot of crazy stuff, but recording and future touring are very much in the works.
