All this week, Behind the Setlist is previewing Volume, a music festival in Spokane, Washington, which features 100 DIY and indie artists from the Pacific Northwest and beyond (put together by our friends at the Inlander). Our Spokane team will be on the ground during Volume on June 2 and June 3, but we wanted to dive into these artists ahead of time.
Who are they, where do they come from, and what can we expect? We turned up the Volume on each artist for a little preview palaver.
Versing @ Red Room Lounge, 6/3, 10:45pm
Where are you from and how did the group come together?
Versing was formed in Tacoma while we were in college. Everyone knew each other through the college radio station. Dan, Max, and Graham started as a three piece in 2014 with Graham playing bass, but he switched to guitar when Kirby joined later that year. Dan, Max, and Kirby are all a year older than Graham so when they graduated he had to commute to Seattle for practice and shows while he finished college. Now we all live in Seattle!
What’s your favorite song to play live right now?
“Body Chamber” is fun to play!
What goes into the making of a great setlist?
Usually it’s Graham trying to cut as many songs as possible. We do try to play pretty different sets for each show. But there are a few songs that usually get into each one.
Who are you most excited to see at Volume?
We are stoked to see Dreamdecay, Chastity Belt, and Built to Spill!!
If a Spokanite stumbles into a Versing performance during Volume, what type of show are they likely to see?
We are probably gonna be too loud!
